"Traumatic events come in many forms, and people cope with them in different ways, but there are some patterns in the ways people respond to abuse. These patterns depend on:
the person’s age at the time of the abuse the abuse survivor’s relationship to the person who abused her
whether the abuse happened once or was repeated over time".
Traumatic Experiences
Trauma is an painful and frightening experience that overwhelms a person's capacity to cope with stress.
A traumatic event might leave the person experiencing a variety of painful feelings. Such experiences can change the
way a person thinks and feels about life, Self, and relationships. A traumatized person might feel limited in
his orher capacity to enter relationships, or be afraid of acting on own initiative.
(quoted from
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health)
You do not have to live with the painful memories and the impact of trauma forever. There are many ways to resolve
trauma. But the first requirement is a safe relationship; one that gives you a sense of trust and hope, one that
helps you feels it is alright to be vulnerable.
Talking about these feelings, and experiencing them in the session through words or pictures, allows you to
master the old experience that left you feeling weak and helpless.
