Traumatic Experiences

Trauma is an painful and frightening experience that overwhelms a person's capacity to cope with stress. A traumatic event might leave the person experiencing a variety of painful feelings. Such experiences can change the way a person thinks and feels about life, Self, and relationships. A traumatized person might feel limited in his orher capacity to enter relationships, or be afraid of acting on own initiative.

"Traumatic events come in many forms, and people cope with them in different ways, but there are some patterns in the ways people respond to abuse. These patterns depend on: the person’s age at the time of the abuse the abuse survivor’s relationship to the person who abused her whether the abuse happened once or was repeated over time".
(quoted from Centre for Addiction and Mental Health)
